Are you failing your Diet, or is your Diet failing you?
Sol Orwell just published an excellent article on “survivorship bias” – erroneously focusing on people or things that make it past some selection process while overlooking those that do not.
We all have that friend who lost tons of weight by going Paleo or packed on muscle by doing P90X. But, we fail to look at those who didn’t have success doing those things. Then, we try those things for ourselves, they don’t work, and we think there is something wrong with ourselves…
Either we think that we didn’t have the “willpower” to stick to something and have to just try harder in the future, or we think our bodies are messed up and we have to look for another guru who has the answers for us. And another. And another.
If something doesn’t work for you… it doesn’t work for you! Try something else! We try the same ridiculousness over and over, because we have been told that if we try hard enough, we’ll be successful. Sol Orwell and his BFF Albert Einstein would call you insane.
How much time, money, and future happiness are you wasting???
This is NOT a free pass for you to stop trying to lose weight because weight loss doesn’t “work” for you. I’m talking about processes, not results – the way you’re going about weight loss is probably all wrong. This is also not a free pass to jump from Diet to Diet, fad to fad, or training plan to training plan – that’s just another iteration of doing the same thing over and over.
What’s going wrong???
Here are 5 of the most surprising and common (and surprisingly common) failures that I’ve seen over the years when it comes to weight loss… plus, some alternatives to switch things up. Sometimes it pays to be a quitter.
